Best of 2011: Director/Animation/Foreign Film

Of course, when I say main categories I’m leaving out the best pictures since I already made 2 special posts about them. This time, it’s time for the directors, animation, and foreign language film. Also, I’m sorry to say I don’t have any picks for documentaries since I haven’t seen any. Anyway here are the nominees…

BEST DIRECTOR

alphabetically

  1. Stephen Daldry, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
  2. Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne, The Kid With A Bike
  3. Asghar Farhadi, A Separation
  4. Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life
  5. Jeff Nichols, Take Shelter
It’s a wonder how Daldry could get the most out of his actors and deliver a powerful tale from a kid’s perspective. Dardenne brothers for once again did a wonderful job in creating a realistic story this time about an adventure of a kid with his bike. Farhadi wrote a tight masterful script, direct the best out of his ensemble and still handily execute this complex moral story. Malick came back with a bang and delivered a larger-than-life story that only him could create it. Nichols showed off his big talent in creating an apocalpyse story that mixes dark horror with psychological terror and human drama.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

alphabetically
  1. Puss In Boots
  2. Rango
  3. Winnie the Pooh
These are the only worthy nominees in my opinion. I love the endless humor from Puss In Boots and the charm from the main character. Rango may takes the cake as the best in the bunch for its wonderful non-3D color and story that adults can still appreciate. Winnie the Pooh cannot be forgotten that in its short length, it draws you into the sweet nostalgia.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

  1. A Separation
  2. The Kid With A Bike
  3. Elite Squad: The Enemy Within
  4. The Skin I Live In
  5. How I Ended This Summer
Although I’m sad to leave out name like Le Havre, these 5 films are truly the best. How can anyone not be awed by A Separation or like The Kid With A Bike? The sequel to Elite Squad is the kind of film that makes you hold the edge of your seat, meanwhile Almodovar will make you wonder with his mind-blowing The Skin I Live In. Last but not least, How I Ended This Summer is a gem that should be watched by more film buffs.

I do really think that you’re such a Daldry-lover! Lol. By the way, no Fincher?! Hahaha.

I am, there’s nothing wrong for loving such a gifted director like him. Hahaha.

As much as I love Fincher, this is just not his year. Such a tight competition this year.

Yes this not this year indeed, to win some major awards. But, I think his work for Dragon Tattoo is unarguably brilliant and nearly flawless. Much deserved to be nominated on Oscar than….let’s say, Woody Allen!!

Best Director’s line-up could’ve been very boring this year (Hazanavicus to win?), but when I saw Terrence Malick showed up, it was very exciting although not in a million years he’ll win.
