Best of 2011: Visual Categories

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

  • The Tree of Life
  • Hanna
  • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
  • Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
  • The Ides of March
The Tree of Life easily takes the cake as the winner here, but Hanna and Dragon Tattoo deserve to be here for its amazing camera works in action oriented films. Best Cinematography doesn’t have to be sweeping scenery, that’s why modern drama films like Loud and Close and Ides of March should be acknowledge for their masterful shots.

BEST ART DIRECTION
  • Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
  • A Dangerous Method
  • Jane Eyre
  • The Skin I Live In
  • Hugo
For me the best would be either Tinker, Tailor or Hugo. Both have amazing production designs that bring details from different era. A Dangerous Method and Jane Eyre may not look fancy like other period dramas, but both have designs that help the audience distinguish what era they are set. The Skin I Live In has clean and slick production design that works well with the film’s mind-blowing story.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
  • Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
  • My Week With Marilyn
  • Jane Eyre
  • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
  • Heartbeats
aka Best Looking and Tailored Costume Design. All men in Tinker, Tailor look ready for pose on GQ magazine. My Week With Marilyn features strong work not only in the men department and Marilyn’s impressive wardrobe, but also the costume for the film set. Jane Eyre looks mighty with its detailed period costumes. I love the punk gothic wardrobe for Lisbeth Salander and the appropriate chinky sweaters worn by all Blomkvist residents in Dragon Tattoo. The three main characters in Heartbeats look unarguably hip and trendy with their colorful wardrobe.

BEST HAIR AND MAKE-UP
  • My Week With Marilyn
  • The Iron Lady
  • Meek’s Cutoff
This category celebrates works for making actresses look pretty, old, and worn out.

BEST VISUAL EFFECT
  • The Tree of Life
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon
  • Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Pt. II
  • X-Men: First Class
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes
80% of this category is summer blockbusters, but to look at their respective visual effect, they deserve to be nominated. Hard to pick, but Transformers and Planet of the Apes have best visual effect from 2011.

BEST FILM EDITING
  • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
  • Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
  • The Tree of Life
  • Hanna
  • Martha Marcy May Marlene
If best editing means to make a film flows seamlessly and feels shorter than it actually is, then these films are perfectly qualified for that.
