Last year has been a remarkable year for women in films as it should. A young actress carries her film to be #1 in the box office chart, an actress floating in space and carries that film alone to be a box office winner, an actress giving a performance for the ages, a previous four-time nominee got her first leading nod, two women won the Palme d’Or, and many more. While not all of the above make it into the final round, they have been a big part of a great year with great roles and characters for women and the more reason why they should be more celebrated. I know it’s only October and the Oscar nominations are not even announced yet, but at least we start to know who are the contenders for the next two or three months. Awards season is like playing “last man standing.” At the start of this year we could name a bunch of films and actors who look like they were gunning for the Oscar, but then the months went by and one by one started to drop from the surface. Whether it is because the performance are simply don’t live up to the hype or maybe it is some “technical” issues like bad reviews and box office bombs that kill them. Or they are simply kept on the shelves for the next year by the studios. Either way, let’s pray in silence for those contenders who are not with us anymore.
