When a film is deemed as the Best Picture frontrunner for next year’s Oscar, it’s hard not to get excited to find out if the quality matches its buzz. But have no fear, after watching Steve McQueen‘s latest movie 12 Years A Slave is a worthy picture to win Best Picture.
If there is something that I get from McQueen’s previous two movies is that he likes to do long takes to the extreme. And I’m actually a fan of long take in a film. But I noticed or maybe I just missed it that he didn’t do it this time. Although there is this one scene which would be an amazing pick for Chiwetel Ejiofor‘s Oscar clip where the camera lingers on his face -this scene is right after an intense fight/argument- for a couple minute and we focus on him until his eyes finally meet the camera or us exactly and then look away again. It’s a silent scene but it’s very powerful and moving that it’s a testament to Ejiofor’s strong performance. Continue reading
