2nd ThatFellow Awards: Acting

Best Ensemble Cast:

  1. Cloud Atlas
  2. Django Unchained
  3. Moonrise Kingdom
  4. Anna Karenina
  5. Les Misérables

I kinda hated Les Misérables, but I won’t deny that the cast are great. Anna Karenina may be only appreciated for its technical aspect, but the cast are actually bringing their A-game too. The story in Moonrise Kingdom may focus on its two young actors, but the older supporting actors work very great rounding up Wes Anderson’s film. Django Unchained may only get noticed for its four characters, but if you look closely this film actually has a strong ensemble cast. Cloud Atlas is totally a paid off collaboration between its ensemble cast with the three directors.

Best Duo Performance:

  1. Jean-Louis Trintignant/Emmanuelle Riva in Amour
  2. Mattheus Schoenaerts/Marion Cotillard in Rust and Bone
  3. Bradley Cooper/Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook
  4. Jake Gyllenhaal/Michael Pena in End of Watch
  5. Suraj Sharma/CGI Richard Parker in Life of Pi

In Amour, Trintignant and Riva make a believable couple as if they have been married for years and now entering a devastating final years. Meanwhile in Rust and Bone, Schoenaerts and Cotillard are united by tragedy where one needs the other to live. Cooper and Lawrence make an electric couple where both are equally emotionally damaged. End of Watch wouldn’t work that much if it wasn’t because a perfect pairing of Gyllenhaal and Pena where they also make a dynamic cop buddies. I don’t think you could pass watching Life of Pi if you didn’t care for Pi (Sharma) and Richard Parker because they are the main attraction in the film, and Sharma along with awesome CGI tiger create this bond that the audience care for until the end of the movie.
